Smarter way of farming
Smart Farming Project PANTHEON is a Research project funded by the European Commission within the Horizon 2020 framework Programme.
WaterPlanning is an advanced technical workshop for MANAGEMENT AND PLANNING OF IRIGOUS ACTIVITIES IN THE FIELDS.
PANTHEON is an innovative smart farming research project funded by the European Commission under the Horizon 2020 Framework Programme. Developed in response to real-world agricultural challenges and inspired by the operational needs of Ferrero, the project aims to establish a new paradigm for the precision management of hazelnut orchards through the integration of advanced sensing technologies, robotics, artificial intelligence, and data-driven decision support systems.
The primary objective of PANTHEON is to monitor the phytosanitary status of every individual plant within an orchard, enabling farmers to perform highly targeted interventions rather than relying on traditional field-wide treatments. This approach not only improves crop health and productivity but also reduces operational costs, minimizes environmental impact, and promotes sustainable agricultural practices.
Monitoring Agricultural Fields with Advanced Technologies
At the heart of PANTHEON is a comprehensive monitoring infrastructure designed to continuously collect and analyze data from agricultural fields. The system integrates multiple sources of information, including unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs), unmanned ground vehicles (UGVs), remote sensing technologies, environmental sensors, and field observations.
These technologies work together to monitor critical agronomic parameters such as plant health, soil conditions, irrigation requirements, pest infestations, disease outbreaks, and environmental stress factors. By creating a detailed digital representation of the orchard, the system enables early detection of potential issues before they become significant threats to crop production.
Intelligent Data Processing and Analysis
PANTHEON employs a sophisticated data processing chain that transforms raw field measurements into actionable agricultural insights. Data collected from drones, ground vehicles, sensors, and field operators is transmitted to centralized processing platforms where advanced analytics, machine learning algorithms, and image processing techniques are applied.
The system is capable of identifying patterns and anomalies that may indicate plant diseases, nutritional deficiencies, water stress, or other agronomic concerns.Through continuous analysis of historical and real-time data, PANTHEON helps farmers make informed decisions that maximize yield while optimizing resource utilization.
User-Friendly Decision Support System
One of the most important components of PANTHEON is its user-friendly Decision Support System (DSS).Designed with farmers, agronomists, and agricultural managers in mind, the platform presents complex technical information through intuitive dashboards, maps, and visual reports.
he DSS provides recommendations for irrigation scheduling, fertilizer application, pruning activities, pest control measures, and disease management strategies. By delivering clear and practical guidance, the system empowers users to make timely and effective decisions that improve overall orchard performance.
Integrated Agricultural Management
PANTHEON supports a fully integrated agricultural management approach by combining monitoring, analysis, planning, and intervention within a single digital ecosystem. Farmers can manage multiple operational activities through one platform, improving efficiency and reducing the complexity associated with modern agricultural operations.
The system facilitates coordination between field activities, machinery, sensors, and decision-making processes, creating a seamless workflow that supports sustainable and precision-based farming practices.
A Collaborative European Innovation
he PANTHEON consortium is coordinated by Professor A. Gasparri and brings together a multidisciplinary team of leading academic institutions and industrial partners. The consortium includes four universities—Roma Tre University, Université Libre de Bruxelles (ULB), Trier University, and the University of Tuscia—alongside two industrial partners, Sigma Consulting and Ferrero.
Together, these organizations contribute expertise in robotics, control systems, agronomy, remote sensing, artificial intelligence, machine learning, and big data analytics. This combination of scientific knowledge and industrial experience ensures that the solutions developed within PANTHEON address real agricultural challenges while remaining practical and scalable for commercial deployment.
Shaping the Future of Precision Agriculture
PANTHEON represents a significant step forward in the digital transformation of agriculture. By combining advanced monitoring technologies, intelligent analytics, and user-friendly decision support tools, the project enables more precise, efficient, and sustainable management of agricultural resources.
The result is a next-generation farming ecosystem that increases productivity, reduces costs, minimizes environmental impact, and supports the long-term sustainability of modern agriculture. Through innovation and collaboration, PANTHEON is helping shape the future of precision farming and smart orchard management.
